The area around Istranova also attracts the seekers of mysterious myths and unexplained and forgotten stories. In the village of Krkavče in the Šavrini hills, not far from Istranova, stands a monolith approximately 2,5 meters high, known as the Krkavče Stone. This stone has stirred up the scientific and other inquisitive spirits for decades. Numerous archaeologists, historians, art critics and artists attempted to solve its mystery, attributing it various ages and purposes. The stories told about this imposing object buried as deep as a metre below the surface of the ground, vary: in the nearby castle named Gradišče it was supposedly used as a pillory. It is said that it was once a part of a certain old house, while the stylised image of a human with arms outstretched and a crown of sun rays engraved in it could well depict the Persian god Mithra, the Slavic god Svarog, or, in the opinion of the more imaginative people, represent a proof of ancient visitors from outer space :)
The local people are quite proud of this stone and they always like to tell an intriguing story or two about it. Therefore it is no wonder that in 1998, when the stone was taken to the Restoration Centre of the Republic of Slovenia, its “theft” was immediately reported to the police.
Some people believe that the Krkavče Stone emits special energy, thus they visit it with requests and thanks, which is the reason for the remains of candles and flowers surrounding it. Whatever the case may be, the mystic nature of the Krkavče Stone will probably not be revealed for a long time to come, which makes it even more attractive for the more inquisitive and imaginative visitors.
